When cavities develop inside the grooves of the teeth, the teeth get weaker. Decay can spread from the grooves over the chewing surface of the teeth.
Inlays and Onlays are designed to restore the decayed tooth before the situation worsens.
What are they?
- An inlay is a treatment that covers decay inside the grooves of the teeth.
- An onlay is a treatment for decay that has spread over the chewing surface of the tooth
- Both inlays and onlays restore the tooth to its full function and natural look.
The process for inlays and onlays are very similar. Decay is removed from teeth, then an impression is made for the prepared area. From that impression, a custom-made, tooth-colored inlay or onlay is created.
The inlay or onlay is then fitted and cemented in place. Porcelain inlays and onlays may be the better treatment option for you over metal fillings.
